Double, double toil and trouble

Everyone that knew I was talking about adjusting Temperature and Tint, please raise your hands…

2 Witch: Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

Macbeth – Shakespeare

Okay, everyone knew. I’m pretty comfortable touching the Temperature slider in LightRoom, but if I even look at the Tint adjuster, my picture will go the way of the above cauldron: bubbling, foul smelling, and green.

I discovered the Temperature/Tint Eye-Dropper tool coincidentally in two places. Both came within a day of each other. The first, a website talking about LightRoom in very broad terms:

BHPhotoVideoProAudio

I wish I knew the presenter’s name. He covered the “Basic” controls. He started with Temperature.

That same day, or soon after, my fellow contributor here on this site, Patrick, pushed home the idea that you really need to start with this adjustment to be in the ballpark as it were. His comment and words to live by: press the button and watch the sliders.

You learn a lot from watching. Then a bunch from doing.

However, I’ve come to my own list of the order in which to do things. I’m sure it will change tomorrow. .. and the day after. But for now it looks like this:

  1. Go through the whole row and flag the pictures you like.
  2. Decide to work on similar ones together.
  3. Crop the photo. No need in adjusting what isn’t going to be there.
  4. Temperature/Tint Eye-Dropper tool.
  5. Fine tune Temerature and Tint
  6. Adjust exposure
  7. Adjust Highlight/Light/Dark/Shadows
  8. Adjust Clarity
  9. Go away
  10. Of the select list, start again from #1

I’ve heard the words Work Flow many times. As I write this note, I now see that workflow is really about process and consistency. In a previous article, I wrote about the scientific method and limiting changes so that the effect of changes are clear. These 10 steps are another acknowledgement of being consistent.

And finally, I can’t stress enough the asset LightRoom 5 has been. However, and there is a big however. It is a very big country in there. Big and complicated. Lots to learn. Many options. The youtube video I pointed to above says just that.

So learn the basics first. There is a lot of power there. That is where I am and will continue to be for some time. But it is a really exciting new arena in which I’m now playing
