Lessons learned again

Success is the sum of details.

Harvey S. Firestone

Having just returned from an excellent Fall Colors trip to the Eastern Sierra, I was struck again both by how much there is still to learn, and what I have forgotten and need to relearn. I have gotten rusty at the simple mechanics of landscape photography while focusing on weddings. Conclusion- I need to more regularly go out and shoot landscape photos. I watched my son Rogan as we shot various locales, I learned to not only look for the vistas and composition, but to look for other opportunities like still lifes and macros. Maybe I knew this before, but if I did I’ve forgotten.

Making a good photograph is the sum of many small details that add up: checking the corners and edges, the exposure, the focus, the framing, white balance. And before all of this is there recognition that there is a something that feels like a picture. Recognizing the something allows me to actively work to capture the ‘it’ in a photo.
